Elizabeth has "three children" -- Oct 26/92 letter from Chrissie MacKenzie
There are reportedly at least two boys and a girl in Elizabeth's family. One
boy is said to be named John - no other information available.
Anne Maree "has one boy" -- Oct 26/92 letter from Chrissie MacKenzie
Anne reportedly has one son named Neil. No other information available.
John was a member of the Scottish Home Guard in the Greenock area near the shipyards which were heavily bombed during WW II. After the war he was a bus driver on both local and long distance bus routes between Scotland and England before immigrating to Canada in 1957 to take up farming.
Elizabeth Maclean MacDonald GARDNER
Lizzie, (as she liked to be known), ran a bakeshop in Greenock selling her "Scottish Goodies" of oatcakes, potato scones, etc. , before coming to Canada. After her husband's death, she and her daughter Mary moved back to Greenock, Scotland in October 1973.
He was an Inspector with the Criminal Investigation Branch of the Ontario Provincial Police before his retirement in 1985. For a hobby, Ossie collected and refurbished antique chime clocks of which he had a large collection. He was a Sergeant in charge of the OPP detachment in Kenora, Ontario when he first met Norma, his eventual wife. Norma told me Ossie once had to arrest her father for being "drunk in a public place" and had him spend the night in jail to sleep it off. (This must have put a strain on their relationship. I don't know the timing of this incident, other than it was before the wedding). Certainly her father Joe was legendary in the family for his partying and Ossie was probably tested a few times before he finally felt he had to take action. I met the family in 1951 when with my parents, we drove up to Sioux Lookout, the year before Ossie and Norma were married.
Family information is that his given name was Kenneth. This is because it is KNOWN his grandson was named Hector, and locally in Gaelic, this Hector was called "Hector Murdo Kenneth". (This compound name was a time-honoured application of a Scottish 3-generation naming formula making it reasonably certain the actual given name for Hector's grandfather was in fact "Kenneth"). The 1881 census for Gairloch lists him as a "fisherman" with his wife Isabella and one son Kenneth still living at home. He shows with his parents on the 1841 census taken at "Badachro", age 28, with two younger siblings William 20 and Isabella 15. ("Badachro" was known to have been the established family homestead for several generations). Marriage record LDS: M110664. Birth record LDS C110662.
