Earl and his oldest son died together in a tragic accident. It started as a family picnic around a local pond. Someone had shot a duck, and Earl swam out to get it, with his son Joey on his back, arms tightly around his father's back. Earl was a strong swimmer, but Joey couldn't swim. Apparently Earl had a heart attack and they both drowned. His wife was left to raise four young children, one only a few months old.
