Waddell history

Notes

Charles Henry VOGEL

The photo shown is a reproduction of a reputed Vogel family crest.  While the family
surname is definately of proven European Germanic origin, this crest and its authenticity
are unverified, and no information is available to support any connection of it to this
section of the Vogel/Fogal family line.

The 1861 Census for Markham Township supports previous family oral history that Charles and Anna immigrated from the USA to Canada around 1794 where they occupied land later described as Con 3, Lot 16, Markham Township.  At the time, many immigrant families from the USA were registered as "United Empire Loyalists"-- (those that had British sympathies and had lived in the USA before the American war of independence).  However as immigrant families in this group had not even arrived in the USA until well after the war was over, they are NOT on "U.E.L." lists, so that part of previous family oral history is not supported.

What is known is that In 1792, William "Moll" Berczy, a German entrepreneur, lead a party of some 60 German Quaker families to America to take up land in the Genesee Valley area of New York State.  These settlers sailed from Hamburg, Germany in May 1792 on the ships "Catharina" and the "Heinrich and Georg".  (The Catharina arrived in Philadelphia on July 28, 1792 and the Heinrich and Georg landed sometime later in New York).  The land deal in New York State was not successful so many of the 60 families totaling some 220 settlers now followed Berczy to Upper Canada throughout 1793/4.  Berczy had negotiated with Governor John Graves Simcoe for land grants in Ontario, north and east of "York".  This area later became known as Markham Township.  The land grants were in exchange for help in opening Yonge street to Bond Lake and the development of farming and industry in the area.  (It is most likely that Charles and Anna, as part of this group now moving to Ontario, were married in Pennsylvania sometime before they set out for Canada).  It is known that Charles Vogel drew a lot in November 1794 and the land patent was issued in 1804.  The property was later described as lot 16, 3rd concession of Markham Township, (200 acres), and the family is recorded as occupying that location in the first official census of 1861.

   FOOTNOTE:
Much of the above information is from the publication "The Markham Berczy Settlers
Association Celebrating the Bicentennial - Markham - 1994".

Anna BRITTAN

Elinore Copeland - a 2nd great-granddaughter of William John Fogal, supplied information that Ann's maiden name was most likely "Brittan".  This is based on reported extracts from the estate records of an "Archibald Brittan" in the Twp. of Manlius, State of New York listing his birth as 12 May 1784 and his death as 12 May 1822.  (It may only be a co-incidence but it is noted that no less than three events in this report carry a date of "12 May".)  The extracts are also reported to show sisters of Archibald Brittan as Elizabeth (born 3 Aug 1793), and "Ann" (born "12 May" 1778) -- and that Ann later had sons Philip and John Fogal.

COMMENT:
There are obvious gaps and certain inconsistencies in this information particularly as it relates
to Ann's reported age and the known age of her sons Philip and John.  Nonetheless, it would seem
to at least support the contention that Ann's maiden name was indeed "Brittan".   A "Myrtle Kennedy"
(whose sources and family connection are not known to me), gave this unverified report to Elinore Copeland.

Mary ALEXANDER

Mary WATKINS

Birth record based on an LDS submitted entry.

William John FOGAL

Although his full given name was William John, he chose to be known by his second name of John.  (This was likely because his older brother John Philip was known by his second name of Philip).  Both sons were born in Markham Township soon after their parents immigrated to Upper Canada from the USA -- (see notes for Charles Vogel).   William John later moved to the Hornings Mills/Shelborne area of Ontario in what is now Mulmer Township where he married Elizabeth Evans and where they raised their family.  Both are believed to have died and been buried in the Mulmer Twp area.

Elizabeth Jane EVANS

A 1988 report obtained by Elinore Copeland from Helen Bulch of Stella, Ontario, states that the family lived for a while in Ireland and that Richard, (in 1837) and his brother Charles, (in 1840), were both born there.

Henry Widdifield FOGAL

Henry was listed in the Whitchurch Twp census for 1861 as "Henry Fogal" and in 1871 as "Henery Fogel".  In both he is listed as born in Ontario, a farmer and a Quaker of German family origin.  His age was given as 37, on the 1871 census, and listed family members at home were, wife Annie, (born in Ireland), children Philip 14, Agnes 12, John 10, William 9, and Elizabeth 4 - all born in Ontario.  in the 1901 Whitchurch census, he is listed as a widower and living with his son William H.

Anna NAPPEN

It appears she had died before the 1901 census as her husband is listed as a widower.

Mary WILSON

Other than her maiden name (which was obtained from her daughter's LDS birth record), nothing is known about her.  She was not shown on the 1841 census taken at the family farm "Wheatacre" (Wetacre) in Torphichen and is presumed to have died before the date of the census.  Birth record LDS: C116228.  Marriage record LDS: M119662.
