The 1901 Canadian census at East Farnham, Quebec reports the family immigrated from "Wales in 1888" and that Henry was born in Wales, c1855. However, the family was NOT found on any census for either England or Wales up to and including 1881. The family immigrated in 1888 and before the 1891 census. The 1901 Canadian census lists Henry, his wife Sarah and all five children including his son Harry who was then married to Ethel Harding and their daughter Eva born just 2 weeks before the census was taken.
Sarah Elizabeth Emily CHURCHWARD
Sarah is found on both the 1861 and 1871 census listings for Finsbury, London. In March of 1875 she married Robert Smith in Holborn, London and their son Harry Smith was born in Oct 1877 in Holborn. In 1878, Robert died leaving Sarah a widow at age 22. Sarah married Henry Hitz in her second marriage in Holborn, London in 1882. At this point, Harry "Smith" was given the "Hitz" surname he was known by for the rest of his life.
He was reportedly married in Montreal in 1913. No further details available.
Listed on the 1901 census at East Farnham with parents and siblings. While the census indicates she was born in Canada, she may have been born in England before the family immigrated.
