The details and specific time are not known, but It is known that sometime prior to the 1881 census, James Miller (age 69 in 1881) and his wife Sarah (age 60 in 1881), adopted James Meiklem (age 3) and changed his surname to "Miller". James is shown with them, age 3, as "adopted" and as James M "Miller" in the 1881 census at Dunsmore street, Balfron, Stirling. The later 1901 Balfron census shows James, now age 23, as "MILLAR" and appears to be the source of the surname spelling he then used for the rest of his life.
