Legassie Family History

This is the history of the Mignier family from the Island of Ste-Martin-de-Re off the Atlantic coast of France to the present day Canada and places beyond. The original surname was Mignier but over the years it turned into the present form of Legassie or many of its' derivatives through nicknames or misspellings on government documents that existed at that time. In the New World the family was known as Mignier-dit-Lagasse. "Dit" was a French reference to a nickname, in this case “La Guichette”, meaning someone with shooting skills. In this case, Andre Mignier was a soldier with the French garrison posted to the area in the late 1600s/early1700s.
